ACES Europe is a non-profit association based in Brussels. Every year it recognises the European Capital, City and Community of Sport. The cities and communities to be recognised are chosen by ACES Europe on the basis of the principles which determine that sport is a factor for the aggregation of society, better quality of life, physical and mental well-being and full integration in the surrounding community. Obtaining one of this association’s awards not only means international recognition but also commendation for the work carried out in the scope of the relevant cities’ policies on sport; and this in the most extensive network of cities classed as “sporting” in Europe.
ACES Europe’s European Capital of Sport and European City of Sport are annual awards. The European Capital of Sport award is open to European cities that are either the capital of their country or have more than 500,000 inhabitants; the European City of Sport is applicable to European cities with between 25,000 and 500,000 inhabitants.
ACES Portugal was created to support and promote Portuguese municipal councils in their candidatures for recognition by ACES EUROPE as European Capitals or Cities of Sport. The aim was to provide Portugal’s municipalities with every possible assistance and encouragement in submitting their candidatures to ACES EUROPE. The primary value of ACES PORTUGAL is the promotion and development of “Sport for All”, as defined in the European Sport for All Charter.
