The Municipality of Portimão develops several programmes which, in many ways, meet the 5 main objectives of ACES Europe. The five goals of the ACES Europe Manifesto imply a deeper vision of what is practising sport. It should not be interpreted as pure competition or something one feels forced to do in order to win medals and recognition. ACES Europe wishes that every city/capital of sports spreads the message of practising exercise in its full sense, as something that can be enjoying, something one is really willing to achieve, where people learn a sense of community and fair play and something essential for people’s health and wellbeing.
Portimão really understands the wishes of ACES Europe and ACES Portugal, for this is also the way our city has been promoting sport.
ENJOYMENT IN EXERCISE
“Enjoyment is an incredible energizer to the human spirit.” - John Maxwell, North-American author
WILLINGNESS TO ACHIEVE
“In the end, it’s an extra effort that separates a winner from second place. It takes desire, determination, discipline, and self-sacrifice. Put all these together, and even if you don’t win, how can you lose?” - Jesse Owens, North-American athlete
SENSE OF COMMUNITY
“Sport has the power to break down barriers and to unite people in a way that little else does.” - Nelson Mandela, Nobel of Peace
LEARNING FAIR PLAY
“Be the change that you want to see in the world.” - Mahatma Gandhi, Indian leader
IMPROVEMENT OF HEALTH
“To keep the body in good health is a duty..., otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.” - Buddha, Founder of Buddhism
